classes

In keeping with the classical tradition of teaching sculpture, our classes offer intensive focus on the head, hand, and foot.
This approach fosters greater understanding when turning our attention to the figure as a whole.

the head

For those who have never sculpted before this class is a good place to start. We will begin by discussing different clays and how to work with them. An introduction to the basic tools follows, along with a demonstration on how they are used. Students will then be instructed on how to sculpt a bust. Here, the focus will be on the simple geometry of the head, the proportions of the head, neck and trunk and the placement of the features.

the hand

This in depth workshop will demystify the hand, the part of the human figure that challenges us most as artists. This class will begin by building a wire armature. Sculpting in clay, we will examine the geometry of the hand and then delve deeply into a study of it’s anatomy and structure. We will be taking a close look at the hands rendered by the masters, Michelangelo, Leonardo, Rodin and others. In order to facilitate learning, each student will receive their own library of old master drawings and sculpture via text for study and comparison. Learn why this part of the human form is perhaps the most important to figurative sculpture.

the foot

As with the hand, the rendering of this part of the human form is often under realized in figurative sculpture. Sculpting in clay, we will study the structure, geometry and planes along with a discussion of anatomy to understand the foot. As with the hand, there will be reference to timeless masters such as Michelangelo, Zuniga, Henry Moore, Rodin and others. Students will be provided with images of drawings and sculptures via text as an aid to learning.         Both the hand and the foot are studies in form follows function, an indispensable concept to figurative sculpture.

the figure

In keeping with the direction of the previous classes, the student will apply the principles discussed so far to the study of the entire figure. The positioning of the masses (pelvis-rib cage-head) will be an important focus in describing the complex landscape of the human form. Geometry and planes will be discussed as well, in order to further one’s understanding in this artistic endeavor. Knowledge applied for centuries with regard to anatomy, proportion and composition will round out this class’s approach to figurative sculpture from classical to modern. The contributions of the masters from antiquity to present day will be explored in detail to illuminate our study of the figure.
